As any parent of young children knows, it's easy to let your once-stylish interior slip into disarray once sticky hands and boundless energy enter the picture. But fashion designer Sara Berman's house puts the wow factor into family life. This young mum of two (Luella, four, and newborn Raphael) has created a home that's a testament to her trademark dressed-up style – think glam wallpaper, crystal chandeliers and quirky updates of period features.
Sara and husband David, a banker, loved the space at first sight so, only 24 hours after viewing it, it was theirs. The simple paint and paper job they envisaged unexpectedly turned into six months of work - electrics and plumbing had to be brought up to standard, all but two of the crumbling fireplaces needed replacing and the wooden floors were refitted.
Respecting the house's history, while imbuing it with her own, was simple for former model Sara, who has true designer's DNA: her mother, Helene (also a fashion designer) is a silent partner in the business run by Sara and her sister, Amiee. As well as the
Sara Berman line, the sisters design a diffusion label, Berman Black, the Lux range for Urban Outfitters, and By Berman for online store Asos. They are also creative directors of cashmere company N.Peal.
